Teaching Assistant Job Vacancies Will Be Available This Month

It has been confirmed that the next phase of the Teachers Assistants programme will be opening in April. The scheme has had 4 phases already and was seen as a great success.

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has officially confirmed the launch of Phase 5 of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) – one of South Africa’s largest youth employment programmes.

Since its inception, the BEEI has provided over 1 million work opportunities to unemployed youth across the country. The upcoming phase aims to create at least 200,000 new teaching assistant jobs for youth between the ages of 18 and 34.

When Do Teaching Assistant Applications Open?

Applications for Phase 5 teaching assistant jobs will officially open on 22 April 2025. All applications must be submitted through the SAYouth.mobi platform – the only official channel for recruitment.

Who Can Apply for Teaching Assistant Vacancies in Phase 5?

To qualify for this opportunity, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  •     Age: 18–34 years old (must not turn 35 before March 31, 2026)
  •     Location: Must live within 5km of the school applied to (or within 30km for rural/farm schools)
  •     Household Limit: Only one participant per household
  •     NEET Status: Must be Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET)
  •     No Learnerships or Stipends: Must not be earning any other salary, stipend, or be part of a learnership
  •     No Full-Time Studies: Applicants must not be enrolled in full-time studies
  •     Teaching Students: Priority will be given to youth studying towards a teaching degree (distance/part-time/online)
  •     Qualifications: Preference for those with NQF Level 6 or 7 qualifications
  •     No Involvement in Other DBE Programmes (e.g., EPWP, CWP, Learner Support Agents)
  •     Police Clearance Certificate: Must have a valid certificate (no older than 1 month) and no criminal record
  •     Disabilities: Must provide a medical certificate confirming the disability
  •     ID: Must have a valid South African ID book or card
  •     Past Participation: Previous BEEI participants (Phases I–IV) may apply if all criteria are met
  •     Fair Process: No advantage through relationships with school staff


Benefits of Being a Teaching Assistant

Successful applicants will:

    Receive a monthly stipend of R4,000

    Get R30 data allowance per month

    Work for a period of six months

    Gain valuable work experience and develop important soft skills for future employment
