The role requires an individual to manage learning resources while keeping the library users' needs in mind. Duties vary considerably according to the size of library.

The incumbent will promote the use of FRTC’s Library by taking primary responsibility for the delivery of an information service to researchers and publicising the Library.

The key areas of responsibility are planning and management of all activities related to the administration of the FRTC Library, including library user education; library collection development; information services/ academic liaison; keeping up-to-date with current developments (in history and research); understanding of the Financial, Insurance & Banking Sectors and Higher Education.


Responsibilities and duties are as follows:

Selecting, developing, cataloguing and classifying library resources
Addressing learner enquiries
Using library systems and specialist computer applications
Liaising with academic staff, external organisations and suppliers
Ensuring that library services meet the needs of particular groups of users (eg staff, postgraduate students, disabled students, corporates)
Managing budgets and resources
Supporting independent research and learning
Developing IT facilities
Assisting learners to use computer equipment, conduct literature searches, conduct research etc
Promoting the library's resources to users (learners, corporates)

The Academic Librarian will be required to assist with adhoc duties if and when necessary within the Academic Department.


Educational and skills required are as follows:

Diploma or B-degree in Library and Information Science, or an equivalent qualification
One (1) year relevant experience in an academic or research Library
Excellent verbal and written communication skills (English)
Hands-on experience with MS Office (particularly MS Word, MS Excel)
Hands-on experience with office equipment (e.g. printers and scanners)
Professional attitude and appearance
Solid written and verbal communication skills
Ability to be resourceful and proactive when issues arise
Excellent organizational skills
Multi-tasking and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks
Customer service attitude
Candidates should be based in Durban.
