GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The incumbent in this position is a professional social worker who provides direct services to patients and families related to hospitalization, dealing with illness and post-hospital planning. The incumbent also provides social work consultation, leadership and teaching functions for designated medical departments as well as for the community. Adheres to NASW Code of Ethics and exemplifies the qualities and values of the social work profession. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital’s philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE POSITION:
CONSIDERATION WILL BE GIVEN TO AN APPROPRIATE COMBINATION OF EDUCATION/TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
EDUCATION AND OR TRAINING REQUIRED:MSW degree from a school of social work approved by the Council on Social Work Education.
LICENSURE AND OR CERTIFICATION: Licensure at the LGSW level.
EXPERIENCE: Medical/ Acute Care/ crisis experience preferred.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Social work knowledge and practice skills related to psychosocial aspects of illness. Knowledge of community resources, excellent verbal and written communication skills, effective interdisciplinary and interpersonal skills for practice and consultation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Provides social work services to identified patients and families including individual and group counseling regarding the impact of illness and hospitalization.
B. Collaborates with other health care professionals. Facilitates communication regarding relevant psycho-social issues of patients and families to health care teams through recording in medical charts, consultation and participating in meetings.
* Functions as a coordinating link between patient, family, hospital and community resources to assure continuity of care in the hospital and post hospitalization.
* Represents social work perspective and serves as department representative to designated Hospital committees and community organizations.
* Participates in orientation, training, educational programs for students, physicians, nurses and other health care professionals as required.
* Assumes responsibilities for identifying training needs and locating resources and promoting their own professional development.
* Actively cooperates as a participant in the department, assuming back-up and on-call responsibilities, committee work, research, QA/QI, and other duties as appropriate.
