Senior Engineer – Network and Datacentre Services


  • Provide day-to-day delivery of Network and Datacentre operational services for Group IT.


  • Ensure delivery of network services to agreed Service Level Agreements that meet business needs (including Datacentre Networking / WAN / LAN / IP telephony / VPN)
  • Responsible for the configuration of network systems
  • Responsible for the monitoring of systems in the data centre and appropriate logging of events and issues
  • Provide input to the business and vendors on service level requirements for new services
  • Consult Network & Datacentre Service Domain lead to understand system requirements and design solutions
  • Support the development of customer demand plans for live services
  • Compile and maintain the architectures and designs of networking and datacentre services to support the business requirements
  • Document / specify the services needed, including business justification, following corporate guidelines and format
  • Maintain technology standards in network and datacentre services environment
  • Ensure that changes to services are reviewed and approved by business end users, implemented, communicated to vendors and are built into contracts as required
  • Manage the “day-to-day” delivery of the contracted services, be responsible for quality and responsible for addressing service failures for network and datacentre services
  • Responsible for effective resolution of incidents and problems and ensure these are managed with defined service levels
  • Responsible for change planning and implementations
  • Drive continuous service improvement(s) to maximise the effectiveness and quality of services
  • Provide network administration and support
  • Provide VPN Support
  • Conduct research and development in the network and datacentre services framework
  • Provide detailed personal advice and guidance to all users in the effective use of systems, products and services available to them
  • Analyse site survey reports and develop specifications of requirements and plans for installation and commissioning of hardware and software
  • Ensure capacity and availability of network and datacentre services are managed
  • Ensure security best practices are implemented and maintained
  • Responsible for ensuring the network and datacentre continuity plans are compiled and tested.
  • Ensure all tasks are scheduled in the Operations schedule and managed with Service Domain Lead
  • Responsible for the documentation and the continuous updating of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and ensuring all tasks are performed according to the SOP.
  • Assist Service Domain Lead in the negotiation and approval with both the business and Vendor any Service Level Requirements for new services
  • Maintain underpinning agreements with Vendors

Job requirements: 


  • Matric / Grade 12
  • B.Com/ BSc Computer Science degree or equivalent work experience
  • Current industry certification in networking Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) – switching and routing
  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) (Preferred)
  • Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) (advantageous)
  • 5-8 years’ experience in network administration
  • 5-8 years’ experience with Cisco based technologies
  • 5-8 years’ experience and sound knowledge in networking products
  • 5-8 years’ experience operating global services at large complex global organisations
  • ITIL Foundation Service Management Certified (preferred)
  • 5-8 years’ experience working in a multi-vendor IS sourcing environment

  • Competent in the use of Microsoft PowerPoint, Project, Word, Excel and Visio
  • Good command of written / verbal business English (& additional location language requirements)
  • Good knowledge and understanding of domain technology areas (within projects and operations)
