My Client in the construction sector and based in Alberton (Gauteng) urgently needs to fill an Operations Manager position.

Purpose of Role:

To direct, manage and control the functions and effectiveness of the Company Operations within the budget and to produce quality infrastructure on time with the resources available without sacrificing safety or good building practices.  Responsible for the leadership, management and co-ordination of the Operational staff and functions.

Key Requirements:

  • National Senior/ Matric (Grade 12) Certificate.
  • B.Sc Engineering (Civil/Building) – Preferable.
  • Post Graduate Managerial Qualifications – Advantageous.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ management experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in a Building Construction environment preferably in a management capacity.
  • Must have working knowledge of QS, QC and QA.
  • Industrial Relations experience advantageous.
  • Good interpersonal skills, writing abilities and organisational skills.
  • Must be computer literate (MS Word, Excel and Outlook). Having worked on Build Smart is a distinct advantage.
  • Must be able to work under pressure and possess the ability to work within a team.
  • Meeting deadlines is not negotiable and the ability to control your own time management is key.
  • Must be fluent in English and possess effective communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Must work well with others, including Suppliers and Customers
  • Performance Areas:

    Plan, develop and implement a strategy for operational management and development:

    Develop a strategy to meet agreed Company performance plans within agreed budgets and timescales within Commercial, Contracts, Tendering and Estimation Departments.

    Manage and control Departmental expenditure within agreed budgets.

    Evaluate situations, calculate and reduce risk.

     Monitor, measure and report on operational issues, opportunities and development plans and achievements within agreed formats and timescales:

    Establish and maintain appropriate systems for measuring the necessary aspects of the operational management and development.

    Maintain awareness and knowledge of contemporary operational development theory and methods and provide suitable interpretation to Directors, Managers and staff within the organisation.

    Work within a technical or specialist area of expertise in order to continuously improve the quality of the infrastructure and buildings provided.

     Liaise with Departmental Managers:

    Understand all necessary aspects and needs of operational development and to ensure that they are fully informed of operational objectives, purposes and achievements.

    Manage and develop direct reporting staff:

    Assert authority when necessary and strive to work within timescales and deadlines in order to overcome problems.

    Provide direction for direct reporting staff.

    Provide a positive and innovative work environment and encourage staff to accomplish the required tasks.

    Demonstrate energy in the workplace and seek to get things done.

    Develop networks and identify resources as and when necessary.

    Address all conflictive situations as a matter of urgency.

    Assume responsibility and authority for the management leadership, direction and co-ordination of the Operations Department:

    Introduce monitoring systems that identify whether the Departments, organisation, individuals are achieving their objectives as well as any variances in terms of goals and timescales.  Ensure that corrective action plans are formulated and implemented.

    Ensure activities meet with and integrate with organisational requirements for quality management, health and safety, legal stipulations, environmental policies and general duty to care.

    Execute the responsibilities of a Company Senior Manager according to lawful and ethical standards:

    Contribute to the evaluation and development of operational strategy and performance in co-operation with the Executive team.

    Corporate Governance, Company Policies and Procedures, Government Laws, Labour Law, Employment Equity and Black Empowerment Acts.

     HR Management:

    Manage staff allocation and workforce planning requirements.

    Management of all personnel matters.

    Financial Management:

    Manage all projects /sites within the allowed and agreed budget.

    Manage all costs of projects/sites within agreed margins.


    To perform any other reasonable tasks that may be assigned to him/her at the discretion of Management.
