- Carel du Toit Trust
The Carel du Toit Centre in Tygerberg presents an all-encompassing, structured school environment with an early intervention programme, where deaf children learn to speak. The Carel du Toit Trust is the fundraiser for the Centre, committed to sustaining its remarkable and unique service in the Western Cape. Deaf children can acquire natural spoken language if their hearing loss is identified early and there are no other complications.
From as young as two months old, when diagnosed with a hearing impairment, deaf children and their families can enter the early intervention programme at the Carel du Toit Centre, which comprises audiology services, parent guidance, intensive language learning from specialised teachers, and therapeutic support services. The Centre follows the national CAPS curriculum and so children graduating from the programme can enter mainstream schools after Grade 3. The holistic support from the Centre includes feeding and transport to and from the Centre – an expense that is more than a tenth of the fundraising need but ensures that learners are present and participative.
At present, there are 150 children between three years of age to Grade 3 and the Centre has acquired a 75% BBBEE certification.
